Greenland, the new disaster movie starring Gerard Butler, will be released on Amazon Prime Video this February.

The movie, which co-stars Morena Baccarini (Deadpool), sees a family fight for survival as a planet-killing comet races to Earth. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and young son Nathan make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news accounts of cities around the world being levelled by the comet's fragments, the Garritys experience the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.

The film is written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and directed by Angel Has Fallen helmer Ric Roman Waugh. It was released online in the US last December, following a gradual release across Europe, Australia and other countries throughout 2020. Now, it will premiere in the UK exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, with the film available to stream from 5th February. Here's the trailer:

You can't help but admire Gerard Butler's stoicism throughout this overwrought disaster movie.

A comet of the kind that once flattened the dinosaurs is about to crash into the Earth. There is mounting panic everywhere. Newscasters cheerfully tell the public that the nine-mile-long asteroid is headed toward Europe and that hurricanes and tsunamis will follow in its wake. 'Within hours, all of the continents will be on fire.'

Building engineer John Garrity (Butler) takes the apocalyptic news in his stride. His one priority is protecting his family – his wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), who had been on the verge of divorcing him, and his diabetic seven-year-old son, Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd), who has a nasty habit of leaving his insulin in the back of the car.

Chris Sparling's screenplay offers a determinedly pessimistic view of humanity. At times of crisis, everybody here (other than Garrity) behaves with extreme selfishness, violence and irrationality.

For reasons never properly explained, the US government has picked a tiny handful of families to be transported to a safe location. The chosen ones are given swimming pool-style wrist bands which allow them onto planes. Everyone else is left to fend for themselves.

If you're looking for escapism from the daily grind of the Covid pandemic, you won't find it here.

Director Ric Roman Waugh, who worked with Butler on 2019's Angel Has Fallen, knows just how to marshal baying crowds and to shoot plane and car crashes. The visual effects and action sequences (fiery comet fragments landing on freeways, trucks turning upside down, crazed men bashing each other on the head with hammers) are handled with commendable oomph.

As a piece of storytelling, though, Greenland is contrived, nonsensical and very grim.
